Comic Con: Day 3 – Knights of Badassdom

Out of all the films that had a panel at Comic Con. This hands down was the perfect fit for a convention full of nerds.

Knights Of Badassdom full
The film is all about a group of LARPers (Live Action Role Players, that is people who dress up as a character and role play) who accidentally summon a demon which possesses their friend Beth (Margarita Levieva). The film is a mix of comedy, horror as well as good old LARPing action.

KOB 1The cast is made up of some of Comic Con's fan favourites: Peter Dinklage (Game Of Thrones), Ryan Kwanten (Tru Blood and of course from Aussie favourite Home and Away), Danny Pudi (Community) and Summer Glau (Firefly). Also on the panel was director Joe Lynch as well as Michael Gladis (Mad Men) and Margarita Levieva (Adventureland).

What was interesting was how central LARPing is to the storyline. The only other time I can recall seeing LARPing in a major film was in Role Models. The cast & crew researched into the real world of LARPing by consulting with the LARP Alliance during the filming. As well as having real life LARPers be extras in the film. With LARPing being one of the most stereotypically nerdy things to do, it was refreshing to see that it was an homage to the hobby rather portray the hobby with a condescending view.

The film essentially reminds me of teen films, with a bit of horror and silliness which isn’t a bad thing as it is clearly geared towards nerds who are due for a decent film that gives the nerd culture and especially LARPing justice!
