Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog LIVE

When: 20 July 2011
Where: 10th Ave Theatre, San Diego, CA, USA

‘Twas the night before Comic Con, and what better way to spend it then watching the live version of the web mini series, Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.

The web series is written by geek God Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly) and stars Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) as Dr Horrible the evil yet likeable villain who’s attempts at being evil are thwarted by his narcissistic nemesis Captain Hammer played by Nathan Fillion (Castle) as well as battling for the affections of sweet Penny, played by Felicia Day (The Guild). Like every villain he has a sidekick, Moist who profusely sweats played by Simon Helberg (The Big Bang Theory).

Having seen the web series, I had no clue what to expect for the live experience fortunately the show well and truly impressed me even more than some big stage shows I’ve been to!

Dr Horrible 1
Described as a ‘fan driven adaptation,’ the production loyally followed the structure of the original and kept the songs intact.

What impressed me, is that the venue is a tiny theatre for any kind of musical but they made it work from all aspects: the sets, music, acting, timing and the effects.

My favourite musical numbers ‘just happened’ to be my favourites from the original such as "So They Say" and "Everyone's a Hero."

So They Say
The amount of creativity involved to get a web series and actually make it work live on stage makes it one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Even if you haven’t seen the original web series, you should still be able to enjoy the show but it does help if you have a quirky sense of humour or simply love superheroes (if you don’t you’re evil!).

Dr & Captain
Limited run from only July 17 to July 30 which in genius timing to coincide with Comic Con. If you can’t catch it, at least do yourself a favour and watch the original Dr Horrible.
