Sister Act: The Musical

When: 3 August 2011
Where: Broadway Theatre, New York, USA

Referred to go watch the Sister Act the musical (yes, based on the film) by a friend as well as a waiter who coincidentally was friends with one of the cast members, I took it as a sign to go. Growing up I unsurprisingly did watch the original film Sister Act which starred Whoopi Goldberg.

Sister Act is all about aspiring singer Deloris Van Cartier, who witnesses a crime is put on witness protection… in a convent. Coincidentally the convent has a choir of nuns who can’t sing and that is when the story writes itself.

The cast were obviously intentionally cast not only for their talent but also their resemblance to the film’s characters.

Even though it is a prerequisite that to star on a Broadway show you need to be able to sing, and depending on the type of show dance. I was still in awe at the talent of Patina Miller who stars as Deloris. She has an amazing voice that captivated the audience and resulted in numerous rounds of cheering.

Another highlight was the costumes, the explosion of light and shimmer on stage courtesy of every inch of the habits covered in sequins.

The only downside, is a personal one. Sister Act 2 was always my favourite compared to the first film partially due to the soundtrack which included “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”

The musical is hilarious, full of energy, and most of all fun for both the audience and the cast it’s one of the few shows I wouldn’t mind seeing again!
