Hairspray the Musical in Sydney

Who: Jaz Flowers (Tracy Turnblad)
What: Musical Comedy
When: 3 October 2011
Where: Lyric Theatre, Sydney, NSW, Australia

imageThis marked the final performance of Hairspray at the Lyric Theatre. After a bit of research, this version is based on the 2007 film Hairspray, which itself was based on the original Broadway version, while the Broadway version is based on the 1988 film Hairspray. A bit confusing yes?

Starring Jaz Flowers, as the the overly chirpy Tracy Turnblad a plump girl who just wants to dance on “The Corny Collins Show” as well as winning the affections of teen hearthrob Link Larkin.

Set in the 60s, the set and the costumes visually created an explosion of colour on stage. Defined by the envious costumes consisting of solid bright and bold colours on the boys and floaty vintage a-line dresses for the girls.

The uniqueness of this production is the aid of LED screens which act as the background which essentially gives the show unlimited options! The world has colourful cartoon elements and sometimes the background made it feel like we were part of a music video.

But all these bright shiny colours and screens would be nothing without the musical numbers. My personal favourites were “I Can Hear The Bells” and “You Can’t Stop The Beat.”

As this is the last show of the Sydney performance, you can always get your Hairspray fix by watching the 2007 film also titled Hairspray which starred Nikki Blonksy, John Travolta, Zac Efron and Amanda Bynes.
