Problogger Conference: The 5's

I made a major blogging milestone over the weekend… I attended the Problogger Conference. So what is it?

It’s a 2 day conference with over 300 bloggers and soon-to-be-bloggers attending which was held at the QT Hotel on the Gold Coast, Queensland. Despite the “pro” in the title, let me reassure you I have not left my glamorous life of working in an office as a non-blogger, having to take public transport and using coupons.

If the idea of blogging bores you, look at this... mmmm.... Candy (yes, this was our food)!

You may have noticed that I’ve recently started to do sponsored posts (which I fully disclose), this is not out of the kindness out of my heart to support major corporations but to help ease the financial burden of going to the conference. If any brands, PRs or sugar daddies are reading this, I would be more than happy for you to help me out next year!

I created this blog to have a productive hobby that I enjoy, and it completely took me out of my comfort zone. Even though these tips shared are aimed for bloggers, this is pretty much useful to have to push yourself for the better.

The 5: Blogging and Life

  1. The most 'popular' roadblock for blogging/improving yourself is time. A solution is the message from last year was to set aside 15 minutes a day to actively work towards a goal.
  2. Fear is another roadblock, but “getting out of your comfort zone is where sparks fly.”
  3. Have you ever thought, what I need is ANOTHER social network? No? Me too! BUT I am committed to trying to figure out the next 'big thing' Google Plus… you can follow me here
  4. The future is not some place we are going but one we are creating.”
  5. Our future is based on what we do now.”

The 5: Step Change

Darren from Problogger wasn’t sure of the ‘key message’ for 2013 was. For me the standout talk was Step Change held by Hair Romance, Fox in Flats and Y Travel Blog.

  1. Success is a series of small steps, these little steps are step changes.”
  2. Take the step change and get the courage to take yourself to the next level.
  3. "If you don’t ask, the answer is always no!"
  4. List your milestones, so you can always look back and see what you’ve achieved since then. Those major milestones back then are probably tiny now, thanks to your fancy new achievements.
  5. Christina from Hair Romance used to simply just show her hair when she first started blogging, and it was a major step for her to show her gorgeous face!
This talk resonated with me because after 2.5 years of blogging, I finally started showing my unobstructed face. I've avoided it for so long, because I feel uncomfortable in front of the camera. But forcing myself to do it has helped alleviate the fear (even if it means taken dozens of shots to make me look ‘naturally’ ok).

The 5: Personal Highlights

My highlights from the conference was not the jam packed schedule (which was awesome) but all the extras that surrounded the conference.

1. I got to try on Google Glass!

It is just insane! It reminds me of the first time I used dial-up internet and the iPhone. Yes, I saw the future.

At the moment, the clear ‘screen’ is in front of the left eye and “projects like a hologram into the retina.” Crazy. Fortunately, they plan to integrate it to normal glasses. These are REAL geek glasses!

2. The Food

No words needed...

3. I held a snake!

I realised I get more freaked out by overexcited dogs than I was holding a snake! This was my 'wobbly courage.'

4. Trey Ratcliff (aka the guy who has Google Glass)

It may because I was mesmerised by the fact he was wearing Google Glass the whole time (which was described as a chick magnet). But he held a truly engaging talk that was spontaneous and was dictated by the roll of the die. He said despite having haters who claimed he has damaged photography, he simply states “Fight back with awesome.”

He encouraged us to do what we’re passionate about, the way to figure it out is to try different things until you find the passion.

5. My roomie was not crazy!

I've only met the lovely Katherine ONCE before committing to be roomies. For anyone who's interested, she's lovely but more importantly she doesn't snore.

Whew! I think I just did the overview!
