Interview: Alice Sutton from EDITION

As previously mentioned here, I am the Official Blogger for Label Ministry, which is oh-so-exciting. So kicking off our coverage before the event on November 13 with our first interview with fashion designer, Alice Sutton who designs the label EDITION.

If her name sounds familiar, you may remember her from last year's Australian Graduates Fashion Week and her winning the Apparel category at Fashion Exposed.

The Interview

How would you describe your label?

The EDITION pattern making technique called Selvedge 2 Selvedge, is a unique aspect of the label. As well as being a sustainable pattern making method, meaning that there are no off cuts from any EDITION garment, the pattern making allows for unique silhouettes and differentiates the label from its competitors.

Who are your favourite Aussie designers?

MaterialbyProduct, Anthony Capon and Alistair Trung. They all experiment with unique silhouettes, textures and printing and have beautifully dark aesthetics.

What advice would you give to fashion design students who are looking to kick start their career?

I would really encourage fashion design students to focus in on what their strengths are and what part of the fashion industry they want to go in to. And to remind them that fashion is not as fun as it may seem!! So be ready to work really hard!

2 years from now, what would you have liked to have achieved?

In 2 years I would love to see EDITION stocked in more boutiques throughout Australia – one in each state if possible. I would like to have my own studio that I can have workshops in and invite different designers to work in, to promote collaboration and sharing of ideas.

What is your guilty pleasure?

I can’t think of anything right now but I’m sure there’s lots!
