Review: The Bodyguard Musical in Sydney

A few weeks ago, I headed to The Lyric Theatre at The Star in Sydney to watch a preview of The Bodyguard musical!

If it sounds familiar, it's a musical adaption of the film of the same name, that was released back in 1992 starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. The story is basically this, bodyguard Frank Farmer is hired to protect popstar Rachel Marron and despite reluctance from both sides to work together, these ridiculously good looking people unsurprisingly want to do more than work...

The musical was a a lot of fun, even though the premise is based on a creepy stalker with the occasional jump scare thrown in, they manage to have the right balance of suspense and bringing to life Whitney's amazing back catalogue of songs including Greatest Love Of All, I Wanna Dance With Somebody and THE SONG – I Will Always Love You.

With Australian Idol alum Paulini starring in Whitney's iconic role, she nails it! I imagine it'd be tough role to fill being able to deliver on I Will Always Love You, which she clearly has the talent to perform & seems to have more of a Beyonce vibe rather than Whitney (which is a win either way!). Also joining Paulini on stage is Kip Gamblin as 'The Bodyguard,' The Voice's Prinnie Stevens as her sister, Nicki and Paulini's understudy just happens to be another Idol alum, Emily Williams. To find out who will be starring as Rachel for any given night check it out here.

For those who love a classic pop and want a fun night - this is it! The show runs for around 2 hours and 20 minutes (including a 20 minute interval) and just happens to be right next to Messina inside The Star.
